Writing Task 1 - Process - Recycle Organic Waste to Produce Compost

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task

The diagram below shows how to recycle organic waste to produce fertiliser (compost).

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words

The diagram depicts the production of compost via the method of deconstructing organic matters. Overall, there are five stages leading to the final fertilizer product, which can be grouped into two key phases: the mixing of required ingredients and biodegradation period.

First, a see-through plastic two meter cube container with an open mouth is needed as a space to mix all the ingredients ready for the compost process. It is indicated by the diagram that there must be 2 tiny air holes being cut through on each side of the container body, allowing the container to become permeable. Afterwards, the mixing process commences. The image explicitly states that the first and second layers are food and grass respectively, each of which is fifteen centimetre high. Then, newspaper shreds will be laid on top, completing the mixture.

The biodegradation process is instigated by the addition of nitrogen and hot water, and after which, the mouth is sealed up. At this stage, the mixture starts to release heat, exiting the container through the previously cut air vents. The final stage is only achieved after a 6-month wait when the mixture converts fully into compost and become ready to fertilize for gardening purposes.
